Music

Music is taught by a specialist teacher across the school. Children experience diverse musical genres and are taught about a range of musicians. Learning to sing and play a variety of instruments including ukulele, recorder, chime bars, piano keyboard and an array of percussion. Performance is valued, not just within music lessons but in the wider school community, with children getting opportunities to perform in assemblies, celebrations, productions and on special occasions. A school choir performs at local events within the community, including a visit to a local Residential Home and the Smethwick Christmas Lights Switch On. There is a specific singing assembly once a week and singing forms a part of every assembly. Our aim is that through playing, singing, creating and performing, children will develop our core values of independence, resilience and respect; showing improved confidence, communication, thinking and creative skills, while increasing their emotional well-being. The skills involved in playing and listening to music not only use both sides of the brain, improving concentration and memory, but also help children to develop their self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, creativity and self-motivation. Desirable traits for a successful future within any profession.
