Spanish

Spanish is taught to children in KS2 on a fortnightly basis, by a specialist teacher. We focus on the four areas of language learning which are reading, speaking, listening and writing. We use the Primary Languages Network as a basis for our planning. This helps to create a full and enriched curriculum for our children and ensures that we cover the main objectives across the key stage. We want the children to have the confidence to have a go and not worry if they make mistakes. We encourage communication not perfection, which we hope they will continue to use later on in their language learning journey. It is not just about learning the Spanish language, but learning about its culture and geography. We are working in year 6 with a school in Barcelona, sharing videos and resources, so we can learn about each other- our cultures and daily lives. We try to include Spanish in other parts of the day too, so it becomes more embedded in daily school life. We also encourage the staff to take an active part in European Day of Languages, where the children can learn about other languages and cultures.
